General Suggestions

In the past, it was necessary and advisable for missionaries to carry supplies which would last for three or
four years. Shipment of equipment is very expensive and should be curtailed in every way possible., particularly
for the first term. More than likely, you can purchase much of your major equipment on the field.
Details, as to the specific needs, should be obtained from missionaries on that field (or others who are knowledgeable).
Your best advice, regarding what to take to your field and how to get it there, would come from someone
who has traveled there before you. If it is not possible to find someone in your own Mission Agency, there
are other Mission Agencies who are very helpful in supplying you with the names of their missionaries or
workers in those areas. The rules and regulations change so often, it does very little good for this type of
information to be printed in handbook form.
There is one detail which does not seem to change, and that is the fact that you will need several lists of what
you are taking. When you complete the packing of each container, there should be a copy enclosed of its
contents, and you should have another in safe keeping. This helps in more ways than you might think, since
you may forget whether or not you have obtained a needed item or where it is packed, if needed.
Everyone in the family must have his or her own PASSPORT! They are now obtainable for ten years for
those 18 and over, five years for younger. Each person will need a certified copy of their birth certificate
and a passport picture. Applicants who have previously been issued a passport can still apply for their new
passport through the mail. The eligibility requirements are listed on the back of the passport application.
Allow four to ten weeks for your passport to arrive. (it may come in less time.)
